Dispatches from the Culture Wars: A Death to Report
not that reruns won't be coming to a comedy central near you, but i really like mitch's stand-up. there are very few performers that come across well on tv, and he was one of them. "i bought a donut .. and the cashier tried to hand me a receipt. i said, "we don't need to bring ink and paper into this." lolfunny.

whoah

we just had a tornado warning at work. we all had to pile into the bathroom downstairs. in lieu of a panic attack, i just stood in the breakroom with everyone else.

work's a teensy bit slow today.. i'm having a hard time looking busy or finding motivation to do anything. i've been busting my ass for 3 weeks and have to sit on my hands right before every update.

i finally get my ding-dang hairs cut this afternoon. it was supposed to happen two weeks ago, but whoever wrote the little card for me didn't enter it in the computer. so, instead of my regular 6 weeks between, it's been 8 and i'm about to shave my head.

spinning question

thanks to renee for her most recent comments re: the assembly of my wheel.. now i have another question: the auction lady gave me a bag of roving with the wheel to "get me started". do i really have to tear bits off of it in order to spin? it seems like carded wool wouldn't need to be turned into roving if all you have to do is tear it apart again to spin.

just a tip

for time, energy, and water savings. if you're going to felt something, don't do it in your washer.
grab a bucket, as much water to cover the item(s), dawn dish soap, and a small plunger; plunge away for 10 minutes. for real. don't go wasting all that water just to get a new bag or pair of slippers.

you spin me right round

i finally got the wheel assembled last night. i got stumped at the flyer and bobbin step. there's some weird knobbies on the flyer holder thingy that have fishing line tied to them.. which i can only assume is for some sort of tension? i don't know. i need better instructions. the ones that the auction lady sent me are from 1900 and they're for a slightly different (and older) model.
i'll post pics of my trials and errors. as long as they're pg-13.

probably

the reason i don't feel like putting up with much today is cuz we had an awfully full sunday, and it was a good time. i woke up bright and early at 8, hopped in the shower, got kurt up and went to brunch with mom and geo at the esbma on monona drive (it wasn't as good as nauti-gal, but it's closer and cheaper). then we braved woodman's at 11 on a sunday. it wasn't terrible. then we got home and i power-cleaned the ferret room.. they're only about 40% potty trained; while doing laundry. then i walked out into the livingroom and said "bike ride?", so we got our bikes out of the basement and took a mini-ride over to kipp and back on the bikepath. then we sat outside gabbing with neighbors and friends. at about 3, we went to the brass ring which is a really beautifully decorated pool hall/bar adjacent to the high noon saloon. we played pool and table-shuffleboard until almost 6, when we left for bob's apt (above the >tavern) for texas hold 'em. i was | | this close to getting second, but it was getting tired.. so i was done by about 8. came home, nuked some enchiladas and tried to finish the
sting.
i think kurt and i finally went to bed around 11. fifteen hours of non-stop action. that's why i didn't come into work til 9:45 this a.m.

:/

i'm in no mood for a whole lot today.

mt 3.15

my webhost claims to have made changes last week to support the newest version of mt, so i might attempt another installation this afternoon.
i wish my spinning wheel wasn't in new zealand. it's been over a week and that's not nearly fast enough for my american consumerism. i actually dreamed last night that it arrived.
it's been a month of no smoking in the house. i think the smell is finally gone. it sure accentuates the smell of clothes that have been at the tavern.
i finally got some new shoes. i've been looking all winter for a suitable replacement to my brown boots. i ended up with brown heeled pennyloafers. and a bonus pair of sketchers running shoes at clearance price. thanks dsw.

March 3, 2005

blah blah blah

my college sociology teacher (j. mark thomas--whom i took 5 classes from because i liked him so much) used to start out most of his semesters with the same theory; that we, as animals, make our appearance such that it invites the type of person with whom we want to have a relationship (friendly or otherwise). and i have never been totally in agreement with that, because of my own appearance. i firmly hold the belief that i appear and act the way i do in order to save myself the time and/or trouble of talking to someone who doesn't have the decency or patience to get to know me before forming their opinion. this is probably why i have a hard time concerning myself with other peoples' perceptions of me.
i know none of you who see me more than once a year are ever very shocked at the amount of metal on my face, so you might not understand.
