orzo
in an attempt to eat more dinners at home, i started last night by stopping at the jenifer st coop to get some supplies. i figure i might as well pen the recipe that i made up in case i want to make it when i'm 60:
chil'd orzo salad
ingredients:
1c orzo, cooked al dente
1 small bunch green onions, diced
12" celery, diced
2tsp garlic, minced
10-12 sun dried tomatoes in oil (the dried ones discolor the pasta overnight)
1pkg plain feta cheese
olive oil
balsamic vinegar
bragg's amino acids
herbamare, to taste
third ward seasoning (from penzey'sthe best spice you could ever own ever. unfortunately, it is only available for purchase at their wauwatosa location. i always have my mom get me lots and i freeze it.)
method:
while the orzo is cookin', sautèe the garlic over medium heat with a little oil and herbamare. before it burns, add the onions and celery, keeping the heat medium-low. when the orzo has about 2 minutes left, add the tomatoes to the veggies and squirt a little balsamic and bragg's on it. sprinkle with a little more herbamare.
once orzo is done, drain in colander and rinse with cold water (this will stop the cooking and make the salad cooler). put in bowl and mix in veggies. break up the feta and stir in well. add third ward seasoning and chow down.
serves 4; or one of you 4 times.

What's in the Third Ward Seaoning? I am currently hooked on three of their blends, which covers most of the major food styles I cook in: Tsardust Memories is actually a mild, currylike blend that is great on beans or lentils, or rice, as well as with strong flavored meat or tofu. Mural of Flavor is a salt free herb blend that also has some garlic, shallot, lemon and orange peel. It's very nice. I use it all the time on salad and in stir fry. And the Salsa Salad Seasoning is great blend with mild heat, a little salt, and a really nicely rounded out basic mexican flavor. When everything else is failing to inspire me, a good shake of this makes just about every kind of food taste good.

i'll have to check when i get home, but i know it has salt, dried garlic, and big black peppercorns in it. i put it on almost everything! the spices you suggest sound really yummy, too. i just might give them a try, thanks!
