we framed in the coop, and lost two bunnies and a bird. we'd only had davinci since august, but he must have been sick or older than we'd thought.

the bunnies were found by jones, under where the canoe is stored. the mom must have been run over or something. they didn't seem like babies, but they sure were weak and breathing irregularly. we tried feeding them water and simple syrup, but it wasn't enough. they needed their mom's milk.

unfortunately, the closest i have is rice dream almond milk, so that wasn't going to cut it.

we're planning on getting some power tools to finish the coop on friday, and hopefully we can get the chickens saturday. there's a fella that comes to the farmer's market every saturday to sling his potatoes, and he lives in richland center (where the farm is that said they had pullets) and he might be able to deliver them to me so we might not even have to drive anywhere! eco-friendly chickens.

so there's this tiny little muscle in your bum that attaches to your pelvis and wraps around your hip joint. it's called the piriformis (pear-shaped, in latin). somewhere in there, the sciatic nerve runs from your back, near this muscle, and all the way down to your toes.

because of the inflammation of this stupid muscle, my foot has been numb and tingly since last monday. in the morning, i can barely extend my leg to depress the gas pedal... switching from gas to brake is painful, and i hope i don't ever have to do it quickly. i've been taking one ibuprofen in the morning after eating a banana cuz mom said not to take it on an empty stomach. and i've been taking 5mg of cyclobenzaprine before bed so i can sleep at least til 4.

i have some software on my work computer that tells me to take a 5 minute break every 50 minutes... during which i should be performing my physical therapy exercises but the software allows you to skip the breaks; which i do with quite a bit of frequency.

we watched the entire first season of the walking dead this weekend. it's pretty good! unfortunately, netflix isn't cable, so we have to wait quite a while for season two.

we've made a friend at takumi, he appears to be the only male waitstaff and he took a shining to matt a couple weeks ago. his name is nguyen and i find it interesting how the societal differences between his culture and ours make it so he never did ask my name, and he doesn't address or look at me when we're there. however, he has made a deal with matt that we get a boat every time we go, no matter the amount we order:

also, alex likes to lay in my spot when i leave in the morning, but since it was saturday, i was still in bed. so he laid on me:

and, one thing i'm pretty proud of with the pups, is that they know to stop at the end of the bridge into the park so we can check for humans and other dogs before continuing. yesterday, they looked so sweet. so i said, "smile?" and they tried:

those of you with pets are probably aware of the myriad of nicknames that can come up... we have lots of them, but my most recent for nora is "dooty mcbootle".

so i just had another awesome week off work for my birthday. this one didn't go by as quickly as past bday weeks; i'm not sure why, but it was nice.

we spent a lot of time out of the house on bikes, so that was good. we did not, unfortunately, build the chicken coop. i feel like we don't know enough about what we're doing to make up a plan and get the right supplies. cedar is too expensive to buy too much extra... so we'll wait a little longer. it seems ok, since pullets aren't really available til the end of the summer.

we busted out the everlasting fun balls a couple times, i had forgotten how occupying they can be:

we also ran into a friend who shares the same shirt humor that i do:

so ... i'm back to work, and it's ok. i'm waiting for them to raise my desk so i can stand some of the time. my back has been bothering me since ... december? i was having sciatic pain in my left butt cheek until yesterday morning, when that went away... but now my right foot and the outside of my right leg is tingly. i've been doing some stretches in my cube every once in a while, but not with much consistency.

i don't think the weight i've put on over the last six months is helping, so i need to come up with a plan for getting rid of that.

oh! matt got me an awesome stylus for my birthday... so, i'm trying to get my comic back up and running. humorous topics are starting to emerge, i just need to take better notes, i guess.

stay tuned.

we just had a long weekend; easter and all. it went quickly, but was nice.

alex is always smiling:

i played a lot of "draw something!"

my back's been bothering me ... i've self-diagnosed sciatica. my left butt cheek throbs when i clear my throat. i've been doing some stretches that really help, but i feel weird laying on my cube floor... i might make a sign to put on the back of my chair. "i have sciatica and am stretching. do not be alarmed!"

we're starting to think about the garden. in addition to my having joined a csa this year, i think we over-did it last year; we had a few too many plants to take care of. i think we'll stick with cukes (and fewer of those, too), tomatoes, maybe thai peppers again, and radishes.

also, i got a rhubarb plant from the nursery down the street. i've always wanted one (or more!) so i hope it flourishes.

let's get that other post out of here. we finally put together my new and awesome bike. i've been riding it all week and it's pretty smooth. the first couple of days were tough, getting used to the one speed, but i'm getting the hang of it. i haven't done any real hills yet, so we'll see.

we've been kind of decadent lately, below is a picture of saturday afternoon sushi. i tried uni the very first time i had sushi and thought it was awful. i tried it again five years alter and thought it was still awful. i tried it once more two weeks ago and it was great. weird.

i've been pretty good about making my salads-in-jars. i've been mixing up the ingredients. this week was feta and smoked salmon with mixed baby greens and sunflower seeds. i don't think i like sunflower seeds on my salads. they taste too "meaty".

one more thing, we had lunch last friday at the alchemy (which is really good, btw) and they had two of these plants hanging in the front window. they're definitely succulents, but i have no idea what it is. i want one.

for the second time in four months, i've been asked when i'm due/if i'm pregnant.

who does that?

at first, i laughed it off and blamed the bulky coat which scrunched up my hoodie in such a way that it made a bump, but the most recent occurrence (this past weekend) made me feel really shitty. it wasn't bothering me until i decided to step on the scale, which i had to dig out from under a billion things in the back of the closet.

O.O

i can't believe i didn't notice the weight gain. well, i guess i did, but it wasn't until there was a number that i haven't seen since before getting norplant removed when i was 20.

so... i'm being more cognizant about what goes in my mouth. i'm getting a standing desk at work and i'm bringing in my stepper machine in and i'm using it as much as i can.

at least it's making me use my stomach muscles to suck it in.

we had a great night away in dubuque this past weekend. we spent a lot of friday afternoon in galena, illinois finding toys from our youth and some decorative items. we had lunch in an upstairs restaurant where the woman said, "yous", and tried an "award-winning" bloody mary... which did not come close to rivaling my sweety's 2011 award-winning isthmus reader's poll bloody mary.

we headed back north to dubuque to check into the hotel and get our bearings... then we spent a couple of hours at the mystique casino playing video poker. video poker must have taken a huge dive since the last time i was in dubuque, because there was one island of ten games surrounded by dinging and singing slot machine after slot machine.

after we'd lost enough, we headed back to the hotel and checked out the neighboring bar, the busted lift; which seems to have been shortened to the lift. maybe it's working again?

after that, we checked out the restaurant of rotating renters upstairs. it's now an italian joint with red-and-white checkered tablecloths; we split the stuffed shells and were charged $6 "for the extra salad"; which matt didn't eat.

then, the hot tub! it was so relaxing and peaceful. i wished we could have stayed a second night; i was too exhausted to enjoy it later than midnight. i didn't sleep well (i never do in hotels), but we finally got up around 9 and moseyed downstairs to the hotel restaurant for breakfast. we checked out around 11 and headed back to madison to get the pups. by the time we got home and got them walked, we were both exhausted.

by sunday morning, i thanked my past self for also taking monday off. it was a good day to get a bunch of things done.

this week has been pretty productive. i made slow-cooker enchiladas for next week's lunch, taco salads-in-a-jar for this week's lunch, secured a csa for the summer, and checked on my bike purchase.

we also got some walking sticks, whom are hanging out in the living room. pics to come.

almost every january, after being off work for a week+ i usually get this feeling that i want to toss my computers and leave them behind. coincidentally, i've not had a working pc in a week and a half and it hasn't bothered me that much (except for the fact that i'm going to need to allocate ~$500 for a new laptop—for starters).

we (or at least i) do need a device on which to watch movies... the ipad is good for close-up and in bed viewing, but it's just a little too small to set on the coffee table and knit. plus, the ipad doesn't play dvds. i think i have it narrowed down to another toshiba (i didn't have a single thing go wrong until november of last year—making it almost exactly five years old), and a much wider screen... i just don't know if i'm willing to go intel since i like amd.

here are the ones i'm comparing right now, but i'll probably change my mind in two minutes.

yea, i think i'm gunna get this one.

there aren't too many things that remind me of my age... my birthday is one, yes. but, for some reason, paying my water bill is another (then there's taxes, and sparse grey hairs).

i can almost remember the exact time, when i was a kid, that i realized my mom had to pay for all of the water that we used. i thought it was free for everyone until that moment; i think i was 9 or 10. i started thinking of water differently after that.

what about the water that we use to wash clothes and flush the toilet; that's not free? we pay for water just to dirty it?! what about the school's water fountain? i admit, i called it a bubbler in middle school.

almost immediately after buying my home, i installed a rain barrel, and then another one a couple of years later. i'm now interested in doing something with our grey water... i'm not sure where to start, but we'll figure it out.

a friend of mine has a water bill that's over twice the amount mine is; he takes a bath every single morning.
