miscellaneous update

iphones are getting their new os today (except the original version). i can't wait to have the use of folders to organize apps. as it stands right now, i think i have 7 extra home screens filled with apps that i can't get to (because there's a limit of 12? dumb.)

other news: my mood has been rapidly fluctuating since yesterday afternoon. i keep freaking myself out about decisions i've made and my plan for the (monetary, health, emotional, spiritual, barometric) future.

the house is still in a barely acceptable state of disarray because 2nd roommate hasn't found a suitable place yet, so there's no point in putting things where they go because they'll either be moved or in the way and i don't even know whose belongings are whose.

stress does weird things to my body... i'm currently suffering from one of my versions of stress that causes a subluxation in my neck, which in turn creates pressure on a nerve which makes my left thumb tingle/go numb for periods of time. i can't decide if i can tolerate better than other, less persistent but embarrassing and painful symptoms of stress; i really would like them all to go away and never come back (i read that in the voice of gollum).

on a good note: i grocery shopped hungry yesterday and got foodstuffs that will encourage me to eat dinner at home. yesterday, for both lunch and dinner, i made roasted poblano pepper wraps with roma tomatoes, onions, and pepper jack cheese.

if i could eat all meals in, on, or around a tortilla, i would.

slow progress

we were able to freegive the dining room table and chairs in less than a day by setting them on the lawn. this allowed for the relocation of my desk:

geek

so now i have a desk and a drafting table to move into the basement in order to clean the floor. then we need to disassemble the bed frame in order to move it downstairs.

this will give us some semblance of order before julie moves in and we have 22 feet in the house.

:x

you must think me lame

had a long weekend drive up north to see a friends' family and celebrate a retirement. we went through the exact center of the state.

we also discovered that marshfield has some pretty strong feelings about some things:

i also received the ipad and case on friday but with my house and life in a bit of a chaotic state, i haven't had a whole lot of time together with it. i carry it around and sing to it, but we haven't bonded yet.

i've also been extremely lax in working on my braille certification. you see, i've become highly distracted and have very little energy to focus on that goal. i do, however, intend to fix my errors from lesson 7 and work on lesson 8 by the middle of june.

May 13, 2010

stuff and things

i should be fully decked out with the magical, revolutionary ipad by monday. right now, the case is in anchorage and the ipad is in memphis but they both came from china.

also, murder by death was awesome; we all had a really good time. one of the opening bands, linfinity was really good, too. they looked like they were having the best time in the world on stage and it made me smile.

the basement is (almost) fully cleared out, ready for some mold-resistant paint and furnishings. next week is going to be jam packed with rearranging and moving stuff around.

also, these guys were chilling in the creek yesterday.

April 13, 2010

also

i've been able to ask several recent ipad owners about their experience and satisfaction and the answers are making it exceedingly difficult for me to not go out and buy one.

i don't need it. i have a laptop, a desktop, and an iphone. there is no room in that collection for another device.

... or is there?

August 6, 2009

strangely

facebook is acting up, and twitter is down, so i'm forced to return to my tried and true; the blog.

i just finished reading this very interesting summary of amazon's subtle improvements on the purchase action, and came across a recipe for grilled mexican tofu that i wanted to pass on to a friend, but since fb is being a jerk, i can't.

also, i thought this CAPTCHA was funny:

google wave

i just signed up to be a beta tester of the newest and awesomest google product: google wave.

they also said to feel free to leave a haiku for the team:

if google were not,
and something else were there, it
would be a black hole.

June 25, 2009

my new phone!

it's on the fedex vehicle, out for delivery. i hope he knocks loud enough to wake up kurt. i hope the transition will be smooth from one phone to the other. then to pack up iphone 1.0 for mom.

update: kurt did not wake up. they will attempt to redeliver tomorrow. i am not happy.

also, this week has zoomed by, thanks to six usability tests. and i've been sleeping a lot more soundly with the air conditioner installed.

we're looking in to getting central air, tho. we've gotten soft in our old age.

June 22, 2009

many things

to look forward to:

iphone 3gs, sims 3, full series of danger mouse, and the x-men trilogy boxed set.

and nine days off work (starting friday the 26th at 1pm).

June 18, 2009

also

because of this site, i'm buying sims3 today.

June 9, 2009

hmm

apparently, i'm eligible for an iphone upgrade. it would likely be significantly faster than my (original) iphone, but it'll cost $15 more a month for the same service.

May 14, 2009

dangit

so i get home last night and my wireless wasn't working... so i quick ordered dinner from burrito drive via campus foods using the desktop, and start fussing with the modem; eventually my dsl stopped working all together.

then i get a call from burrito drive that my "campus foods account was overdrawn" and can i pay cash? uh, i know for a fact that i have enough money in my checking account but i agree anyway because it's storming and i'm hungry and i want my fish tacos.

i decided to not deal with the dsl because i was gunna watch eternal sunshine and just didn't feel like traipsing back and forth from the office to the dining room all night.

so now there's a pending charge to my checking account from campus foods for the meal for which i paid cash; and my dsl still isn't working.

April 29, 2009

flip

i've been wanting a flip video camera for about a year now, and the price keeps fluctuating... it's at it's lowest right now. so, i was happy to see that i could get a refurb'd on woot today for almost half.

they're out of orange.

February 27, 2009

boo

my internet is out at home.

i usually have good luck when i contact tds, but i hate having to do it. especially now since i don't have a phone line to determine whether it's me or them.

and i'm out of cereal... so my blood sugar isn't accurately regulated this morning.

February 16, 2009

nice

my nighttime and weekend hoody is becoming a collection of holes with strands of sleeve in between. i like supporting american apparel, but every other hoody i've purchased has fallen apart. is a year an unreasonable amount of time to expect a quality piece of outerwear to last?

anyway, i just bought two more... qualifying me for free shipping (by $1). before checking out, i decided to quick google for a promo code. i saved 15% and got free shipping. and now i can look slightly less slovenly while taking advantage of their faulty checkout.

December 31, 2008

still testing

apparently there is no simple way to get my blog updates on facebook so i don't feel like i have to maintain my life in two places. one is hard enough (as you can see by my lack of updates lately).

it can't be this difficult or rare to want a solution.

December 29, 2008

facebook

i'm now a proud member.

this post is to test rss integration. feel free to ignore it.

December 2, 2008

ipod

i figured out why my songs didn't sync. it was user error.

oops.

November 26, 2008

computers

i hate them.

i've been sitting in front of both of mine since 4 and still haven't gotten to the point to reinstall windows.

i had trouble getting it to recognize the new drive as c: unless i disabled the ide drive first. hopefully i can get it to cooperate once i'm done.

this is more for me in the future, gentle reader, than for you.

November 22, 2008

stupid computers

my hard drive is dead. i am at the mercy of ups to deliver me a new one.

this means i can't sync my phone to get the new 2.2 update (google street view!) and i'm without my music library (totally separate hard drive).

stupid computers...

November 20, 2008

hal.dll

apparently my hal.dll file is missing or corrupt.

i can already picture what my friday afternoon is going to consist of.

i knew having two computers was not overkill.

November 11, 2008

long commute

i got 20 minutes away from home this morning before realizing my iphone was sitting on my closed laptop at home. i had mere seconds to decide if i should turn around or keep going since i was at the intersection of campus drive and old university. in a flash, i signaled to turn onto breese terrace. the following 25 minutes was witness to the worst driving i think i've ever put up with in madison.

all for my phone.

i also realized this morning that i had left my snack carrier at work which holds my empty coffee mug and nalgene for easy transport home. thusly, i've pinpointed yesterday as the precise moment at which i turned senile.

October 2, 2008

the internets

i keep forgetting to use friendfeed cuz it's another website i have to go check.

also, obama released a free iphone app today. go get it.

September 29, 2008

luddite

not having the internet makes me feel weird. i've been without it since thursday.

i have 474 unread articles in googlereader and 28 pages of tweets to catch up on.

and i have a lot of work to do today.

September 16, 2008

finally did it

i just got rid of the home phone. i've been paying $30 a month for however long just to get telemarketing calls from some collection agency looking for the person we bought the house from, the volunteer firefighters association, and "UNKNOWN CALLER". seems kinda silly. so, the phone number i've had since 1997 is no longer my phone number. take that.

September 4, 2008

temporary luddite

i got home last night to find that the internet wasn't working... "wtf?" i said. the router was flashing the lights that indicate something was wrong. i decided to check the phone. no dial tone.

20 minutes of a phone call later, a tds tech has to make sure it's okay with at&t that they come out and see what's wrong cuz the line-test "strongly indicated the problem is outside the home".

in other news: i've gotten two responses to my craigslist post, neither of them the guy in question. i also did not see him yesterday on the same walk at the same time.

August 28, 2008

sound

the new earbuds are completely awesome. they don't even feel that weird. and i can hear every single little sound. it's as if i haven't heard some of my favorite songs correctly ever; that makes me a little sad.

August 21, 2008

stuffs

my new earbuds are out for delivery. these will prevent cubemates from becoming angry at my leaky apple earbuds.

and now, for some reason, i want to get a 22" widescreen monitor for the computer that i almost never use. they're so much cheaper than when i bought my 17", it's almost embarrassing.

August 12, 2008

uh..

twitter and stumbleupon are both down simultaneously? lame.

July 17, 2008

webring

i've maintained the eastside madison bloggers webring for over five years, and recently, the free web-based company that supported it changed their business model to less of a "ring" and more of a "we keep your links here". in addition, they're requiring advertisement of their site in close proximity to the webring link (which just takes you to their site where they list all the participants of said ring). see? lame.

so, this morning, i sent an email to the seven remaining members (one of whom is the boyfriend of an acquaintance... two degrees* of separation in madison).

hey guys, it's been a long, fun time... but ringsurf (the free site that powers most of the webrings on the internets) has gone and gotten all lame and weird and it just doesn't seem worth maintaining the ring anymore. webrings have gone by the wayside, being replaced by slightly more interesting social networks like talking, and bars. :)

there are only eight of us, so i don't presume this will cause much of a stir. i'm going to delete the ring which will probably break your links.. so update at your leisure.

and thanks for hanging on for so long. :)

*thanks so much for your help, kevin!

July 11, 2008

heh

i just spent $15 on two apps.

fortunate

my iphone firmware upgrade seems to be going a lot better than most. even though it's taken almost 50 minutes and it's still syncing music.

May 14, 2008

i want this

but i don't really cart my laptop around very often...

March 29, 2008

weird!

they added streetview to madison and it's outlying areas.

March 26, 2008

this is totally cool

mix usb tape.

if kurt were at all techy, i'd get him this for a holiday or something.

March 20, 2008

still cool

blogging from the tavern is still awesome. in case you were wondering.

happy spring!

March 8, 2008

more movies

so, i've successfully ripped girl, interrupted, lord of the flies, and the city of lost children. all excellent films.

March 2, 2008

ripping

i'm attempting to rip a dvd to my ipod. i chose clue because it's one of my guilty pleasures. and it's fairly short.

i'll let you know how it goes.

edit: only an hour later, and i have one of my favorite movies at my fingertips. awesome.

February 23, 2008

amazing

i've successfully upgraded MT... it was probably the easiest upgrade ever.

now, i'm off to check on a friend's kitty.

February 12, 2008

awesome

I'm blogging from my iPhone. this is nutty.

February 10, 2008

well

i ran into a different problem when trying to upgrade, so it set me back til today. i'm still nervous. so i think i'll wait.

February 9, 2008

upgrade

i'm going to attempt to upgrade my blog software to the newest version. i'm always nervous about doing this... wish me luck.

February 1, 2008

netflix

i'd been silently boycotting using netflix's "watch now" feature because they require you to run it in internet explorer. until just now.

i'm becoming more fond of the idea that i can take my lappy upstairs and watch law and order, or just one of the boys, or amadeus from the comfort of my bed!

awesome.

January 10, 2008

day one

this new ipod is great. i am marveling at its grandness. it's almost hard to fathom how they could make it any better. i'm just thrilled that i won't have to pick and choose and delete stuff that is even slightly undesirable just to make room for new stuff. and i can now consider getting podcasts, movies, and tv shows from the iTunes store.

the cover art is a little slow to appear in some views, but i think it's because of the amount of data the software has to sift through to put the right image to album.

January 7, 2008

new toy

just over a year ago, i exchanged my crappy black-and-white 4th gen ipod for one of the newfangled color screen ones.

and now i find myself having to make decisions, and take notes, about which albums to delete to make room for new ones. this morning, i spent over 10 minutes doing this since i had obtained some new tunes over the weekend which i forgot to transfer. i then had to choose which albums weren't worth carrying around in order to make room! i've been doing this for over 6 months and have decided not to do that anymore.

i just ordered a 160gb black ipod classic from amazon.

November 29, 2007

neat

i might have to get this toy, just to have it: usb classical fan.

October 12, 2007

testing

September 5, 2007

hay guise.

the new ipod looks really cool.

anyway, i think i'm trying to make it a personal goal to not order out. i know, it's pretty silly and dumb to be like, "hey! i haven't ordered delivery in five days! look at me!" but it's an accomplishment, ferreal.

i was going to use the rice cooker for the first time tonight, but white rice takes 45-55 minutes, and i was hungry "now", so i made a tofurky-cheese-tomato-avocado toasted sandwich.

not before taking the dogs on a mosquito-infested walk. omg you guys. there were, quite literally, 30 of them hovering around jones the whole time. it was terrible! and then i caught a slug and it got between my foot and shoe and was squishing around. poor guy...

the pups are doing well.. by monday, i was kinda tired of hanging out with them, but the last two days have been okay. i think jones has figured out that nora is staying with us, and not just getting dog-sat for a little while.

i keep trying to give him the attention he had before, but it really wasn't that much; he's not a very cuddly guy, but nora is totally a cuddler and it seems to make jones think like he should be getting the same attention.

we just went for a quick run in the park (two-dog bonus), and they tired each other out within 10 minutes and are now quite content to lay on the diningroom rug. together.

August 1, 2007

success!

i finally have my own internets. again, i'm thanking whomever that i bought this laptop. otherwise, it might be two more weeks before i got my desktop together.

unfortunately, the only phone jack that works is upstairs in the bedroom. so, installing a couple more is another thing on the to-do list.

an aside; i met the last neighbor tonight. mike. he told me that he's our snow plower. he's at the end and the city usually dumps all the snow at the foot of his driveway, so he tops them by plowing first. i'd think he could offer a suggestion to put the snow on the other side of the street, but i'm sure he's tried that angle.

July 30, 2007

also

i had the phone/dsl switched to the new place on the 20th, and had a chance to test that yesterday morning. i still don't have dsl at home... so you'll have to wait patiently for pics.

July 23, 2007

shout out

i just want to thank closetpunk77, whoever s/he is, for letting me use your internet connection today. it seems my neighbor's (who has granted permission to use his wireless) connection isn't cooperating. it won't connect, even though it's at "good" signal strength. so, closetpunk77, i thank you.

July 18, 2007

ok, bear with me

so, my right earbud stopped working and i only just got them in february; well, they came with the ipod radio remote. since i had not heard any more news of the new apple store in west towne, i called apple up to initiate an exchange.

they had to tie my purchase to my ipod in order for me to qualify for the apple limited one-year warranty, even though the ipod had nothing to do with the malfunct earbud. a half hour later, i was well on my way to receiving a package from apple!

so i waited... and finally, in the mail, came a radio remote. without earbuds. imagine my excitement when i realized that i got to call them back to explain the situation! i talked to several people before i finally ended up in sales where we determined he'd just ship another radio remote with earbuds and all i had to do was return the two remotes and pair of earbuds.

great. problem solved. not 3 days later, i get a package from apple and return my package to apple. or so i thought.

among the frazzle that was house-closing, i checked my balance last friday and saw that a charge was pending from apple in the amount of $51.70 (the cost of a radio remote when not returned). guess how thrilled i was to know that i got to call them and explain my dilemma!

after talking to a repair rep and a customer service rep, they thought i should call fedex. the very nice fedex rep tried searching 6 ways from sunday and could not locate the package. while she was looking, i realized apple was expecting a package from dhl, but they had sent me a link to a form from fedex, so there was no way we were going to find this package.

so i called apple back, and after getting hung up on by a cs rep, and finally getting someone who referred my situation to her supervisor, i will be credited the $51.70.

so, all in all, apple was pretty nice about it, but i'm kinda peeved that i had to find the culprit; which was probably just a simple programming error.

May 19, 2007

success!

after spending about 5 hours on the computer, my back is killing me but the tower is all back up and running. i have to say that i'm sure glad i bought a laptop cuz without it, this would have been a million times harder.

now i have to get the network back up and running.

May 18, 2007

so..

i'm attempting to reinstall windows again on my tower. it's not cooperating very well right now. i shoulda waited until tomorrow when i'll have the gumption to spend more than 4 hours on it. :/

tinker's doing well. he's eating and taking his medicine regularly... though, one ice cube's worth seems to be just a little too much for him to eat; resulting in a special tasty treat for jones twice a day.

April 23, 2007

ipod in stereo

so we have kind of a weird set up at home when it comes to the "home theater". i can't claim to know wtf all those cords are for cuz i didn't hook them up, all i know is that i haven't been able to rca my iPod ever since kurt got his hard drive recorder. so i got one of these for much cheaper off of a much shadier website. it works so great! i can have the ipod sitting on the table in front of me and use it as a "remote" to listen to tracks through the stereo.

awesome.

April 21, 2007

uhoh

i played sim city 4 for like 8 hours yesterday. it's a lot cooler than sim city 2000.

April 15, 2007

bad luck

my computer seems to hate me. a secondary hard drive started making a weird humming noise... so i decided to back up all the stuff onto my thumb drive and reformat it. of course, the drive is slowly dying. it's over 5 years old; and only 20 gigs.

so i bought a 250gb drive for only $70. over 5 years ago, that would have been unheard of.

*&^@!^&%! dammiT! it looks like i lost all my digital photos from 2004-present. :/

March 25, 2007

laptop awesomeness pt. 2

i finally get to sit on the back porch and be interneted. it's so nice out today and everyone's got their motorbikes out. except my neighbor keeps trying to start his lame honda cycle and it's not starting. ruh ruh ruh ruh. "it's a nice looking bike!" lol.

d00ds

after too many years of putting up with a web host that didn't seem to want to help me (for 5 years), i found one that will. and did. it's funny that it's called misanthrope.

one of the guys who works there just took all my stuff off the old server and plopped it on the new one out of the kindness of his heart. he even installed MT for me so i didn't have to deal with technical settings, etc.

everything is so much faster! i can actually save an entry without getting a 404 and having to rebuild the index page for it to show up. omg.

so, if you're looking for a new web host, use them.

March 24, 2007

grr!

so my domain registration expired on march 17th but no one decided it would be a good idea to tell me. so i go and blame my web host for not keeping my site up; making me sound like an ass.

sorry for the interruption: back to my regularly scheduled blogging.

March 3, 2007

hmm

good news for the guys at work. apple is coming to madison. they're going to open a retail space in west towne mall. i'd think they'd do better at hilldale or even somewhere on state... closer to campus.

i despise the mall so greatly that i haven't been in either east nor west towne in over 7 years. i'd consider going to apple if they are able to be in one of the spots where you can get in directly from the parking lot (like jcpenney's—is that still over there?).

p.s. my tower is currently under the care of milwaukee pc. i'm getting a new mobo/cpu. a fast, spendy one.

February 25, 2007

thumby

thumb.jpg

so i bought this thumb drive cuz i thought it would be a good idea to get some stuff off my tower (which i neglected to do before yesterday :/ ). i can run firefox directly from the drive; leaving no trace of personal info on other people's machines. not really a big deal, since i don't use other people's machines. so, basically, i bought it cuz it's orange.

i think i have some games on it... and openoffice, which is a non-microsoft office app (word, excel, etc.). the first one i bought died, so i RMA'd it to kingston and they sent a new one without question. i kinda like having it for transferring stuff; if the need were ever to arise.

February 24, 2007

grr!

my tower took another crap. i had just finished recording rumpelstiltskin to edit for my first podcast, loaded them onto the machine, deleted them from the ipod when the machine spontaneously restarted. which reminded me that one of my memory sticks hadn't been showing up and was probably bad; so i spent 40 minutes switching them around, in case one of the slots was bad, only to determine that it acts the same with one, both, or none of the memory sticks. it posts but doesn't beep. i don't have the patience today to deal with taking cards out one by one. maybe tomorrow.

this means you won't hear rumpelstiltskin for at least a week.

February 19, 2007

notebook accessories

those who know me know that i have an orange problem. i like orange things. it's weird. i have a workmate whose job it is to tell me when i've gone overboard. this includes, but is not limited to: an orange car and all orange clothes worn at once.

a month or so ago, i found this accessory, and was immediately drawn to it on account of its color.

sleevetop_closed.jpg

sleevetop_open.jpg

the practicality is lost, though.. it's supposed to keep your lap from getting too hot while using it for long periods, but it's really not necessary. so, it sits on my desk, holding my notebook (and presumably protecting it from dust) until i unplug the notebook and go surf on the couch without the belkin sleevetop.

next time, i'll tell you about the orange 2g usb thumb drive that i bought. :/

February 16, 2007

don't be mad

i set up a google adsense account for my blog. i doubt it'll bring in any money at all.. but if this podcast thing takes off, it just might.

i guess this'll also force me to come up with more better content.

i figure if i get a $100 check in two years, that'll cover my webhost costs. i still don't know if i have to claim the income (if there is any) as taxable income. i suppose not if i don't make more than $600 in a year. we'll see.

January 29, 2007

finally!

after a month of head-scratching, googling, and figuring i'm an idiot, i got the home network set up. turns out, i needed to tell the modem to allow routing (essentially turning on the routing function) and now i'm able to use the main computer's itunes library on the laptop, and print from across the room! awesome.

January 10, 2007

customer service

it's always hard to sit through those menus, waiting for the right number to press to speak to a real, live, breathing person..

wait no longer! some kind soul(s) ha(s)ve collected all the information for us. at gethuman.com.

they're all pretty national; you can submit other companies not listed by using a link at the verrry bottom of the page.

January 7, 2007

awesomeness

laptop benefit #2: ever since we got jones, the ferrets' playtimes has taken a major backseat. they're supposed to get at least 2 hours of cage-free time per day to exercise; even though they're coming up on 5 years, they don't get the time they need. well, i'm currently laying on the bed in the ferret room with the two stinkers running amok. they love it.

December 31, 2006

omg

i googled pizza di roma and got googlemaps. then you can click on "call them" and it asks you to enter your phone number. THEN your phone rings and it's ringing to pizza di roma! omg. google is awesome.

ok so, if you order a pizza from them, and you just so happen to want spinach, you should expect a white sauce instead of red. kurt called them back cuz it seemed like they forgot the sauce altogether, so the phone gal gave the phone to a cook, who was very italian, and he explained that the spinach topping constituted a white cream sauce. kurt said that they should tell customers that they had to specify since it is a pizza and one would expect red sauce. it ended with an expletive. after we doctored some pieces with parmesan, pepper, and oregano, the delivery driver called back to see what was up because he didn't understand the cook's story. he was really nice and explained that spinach meant a feta-spinach-cream sauce and i said we were just surprised and he offered another one. so, we got a credit for the next time we order.

in conclusion, if you order from them and want spinach, be prepared for a weird pizza. cuz i'll bet they don't know how to make 'em with red sauce.

December 29, 2006

sold

i'm officially a fan of the laptop. except! i thought the madison isthmus broadband thing downtown was free! it's not. you have to subscribe. wtf? anyway, i can't seem to hang on to joe's signal next door, so i'm gunna keep my dsl.

now to get the tower working again so i can balance my checkbook. :/

December 28, 2006

i'm baaack!

so when i woke up this am, i decided to bite the bullet and get a laptop. on the way to the dog park (to tire jones out before we went off to do errands), milwaukee pc called to say my broken tower was ready, but only restored to the state that it was in before i tried flashing the bios. this means i'll have to reinstall windows in order to get it to function again. not wanting to deal with that this morning, i decided to still go with the laptop option. so here's my new toy.

December 20, 2006

commuter update

so i called yesterday cuz they hadn't called me back and i was getting antsy. they're waiting to hear back from the mobo manufacturer to see if they can get a replacement bios chip. which would save me anywhere between $150 and $200. i think i'll still have to go get a copy of windows and reinstall that back to some semblance of stability. which apparently is $200! what a rip.

so, i don't know when i'll be back up and running at home... nor am i 100% against the laptop idea...

ugh.

December 16, 2006

so..

surfing internet from couch = awesome.

joe even called me later to suggest that i get rid of my dsl and just use his wireless since i can get it over here (we live next door to our landlord—for those new to my life).

i'm considering it... broadband connections cost way too much considering the downtown area has it for free. i wonder if i could connect to that network over here.

crap

so my computer took a crap. it's been giving me trouble for a month or so, actually, since i got my most recent ipod, it's been goofy. so the blue screen of death told me to flash my bios. knowing that if something could go wrong, it would; so it did.

it's currently in the tlc of the find gentlemen at milwaukee pc. they're like the geek squad, but not a chain. i've gotten computer bits from there for my last 2 computers. hopefully they'll be able to fix it. the worst case scenario is that i'll have to get a new mobo cpu combo :(

so, joe and tooky are outta town and i'm borrowing their laptop! i think i might fall in like with the idea of computing from the couch. so, if my computer takes a dump, i might go get a fairly inexpensive laptop.

i just have to say that if anyone is hesitating purchasing an ipod, the 5th generation gapless playback support is the best reason to do it. now.

new gadget

almost two years ago i obtained a 20g ipod because the first one i bought had battery troubles. on friday, i went to best buy to cash in on the replacement plan as the battery life was deteriorating on said ipod.. since, of course, they don't stock the same model, i walked out with the new video ipod:

i kinda want to renew my cingular contract and get a new motorola razr with the int0rnetz for $5 more a month...

June 13, 2006

site content

i've removed links to other areas of my site since i haven't gotten around to recoding them in a 2006 fashion; additionally, the content of said pages is outdated and probably not very interesting to anyone anymore.

June 4, 2006

upgrade

what with the myriad of song files clogging up my primary hard drive, i figured it was about time to step into some serious storage space. so i got a 160gig hard drive and 512mb memory.

update: everything worked out well; all is up and running.

June 1, 2006

planned obsolescence

i thought my ipod was breaking down this morning.. which would mean that i could take it to best buy and get an exchanged 30gig color screen! the only service plan i've ever used was for this ipod; but it started cooperating again, so i'll have to wait for another day.

savetheinternet

i've been reading about this thing for a couple weeks now, and like many internet rumors, i like to wait a while before i react.. well, this one is quite real. from snopes:

Simply put, network neutrality means that no web site's traffic has precedence over any other's...Whether a user searches for recipes using Google, reads an article on snopes.com, or looks at a friend's MySpace profile, all of that data is treated equally and delivered from the originating web site to the user's web browser with the same priority. In recent months, however, some of the telephone and cable companies that control the telecommunications networks over which Internet data flows have floated the idea of creating the electronic equivalent of a paid carpool lane.

save the internet has a form to fill out that will automatically mail your representing senator. do it.

February 19, 2006

so...

i go to amazon, right? cuz i want to check out my wishlist and see if i can treat myself to some new music. so i'm clicking around, and i see the 30g white video ipod.. so i click on it. then amazon tells me that i have to add it to my cart for weekend prices and it says i can get it for $30 less.. additionaly, if i apply for the amazon credit card, i can get $30 more off. so i'm going to spend the next 3 hours or so considering it.

update: so, i decided the end purchase wouldn't be worth the savings since i'd probably have to get applecare ($52) and i'd need a new iTrip ($50) and iSkin (~$30).. both less shipping. so, i ended up treating myself to a bunch of cds. in addition, mom got me an iTMS gift certificate for the holidays, so i bought two cds electronically.

February 10, 2006

:/

i tried upgrading to a mysql database in order to have a more stable blogging environment but, of course, it's not working because nothing ever goes smoothly when i try to make things better for me. so you get to hear about it. :P

February 7, 2006

oh, good

the new dsl modem came yesterday, and got hooked up without a hitch. it fixed the connectivity problem. now, the next endeavor is to reinstall movabletype with a mysql database so i can possibly reimport 3+years worth of entries so it doesn't look like i'm a bloggyn00b. :) maybe on saturday; we'll see if i have any motivation for computers.

February 5, 2006

:/

my dsl has been down for like three days.. we're watching sam this weekend, so i'm using joe's laptop to check email and blog.

it's actually been more annoying than i had expected. like, someone shows up on tv and i say to kurt, "wasn't he in...?" or i want to see how much something costs somewhere else, or what exactly is the name of this ridiculous movie so i don't accidentaly watch it again? anyhow, tds is supposed to be sending me a new dsl modem, so we should be back up and running soon.

December 6, 2005

well

i don't get as many creepy search engine referrals since 3 years' worth of entries are no longer out on the internets. i do miss going back to see what i was feeling/doing a year ago, though.. but we might have some good news, apparently my webhost upgraded my account last month to include a mysql database, so i might have better luck importing entries into that. i really don't like sitting in front of a computer when i get home, so this transition will have to wait until either the weekend, or our holiday.

new case

i just bought this case for my ipod. i don't know if i'll use it all the time, but i think i need a change of pace. currently, with the iskin, i can't enjoy the ipod's design; though it's much safer in there. we'll see.

July 26, 2005

awesome

so, having gotten recently into podcasts, something really cool about them (aside from their meaning and use) is that if you start listen to one on your ipod and then switch to a song elsewhere, and then go back to your podcast, it'll remember where you had left off!1

July 22, 2005

we just bought kurt a 1g shuffle last night. it should get here by monday. he will use it for bikerides and democracy now podcasts. i just have to figure out how to set up itunes to be smart without having two logins to windows.

more about the ipod

i was telling colin the other day that, previously i didn't see the point of having an ipod photo, but now would love to be able to see the album artwork while scanning through my music. sorting by artist isn't conducive since i have many compilations and collections of works by various djs.
on a completely random note, kurt and i went grocery shopping for the first time in almost 3 weeks. we spent $175; our record.

my attempt to upgrade to mt 3.15 didn't work. apparently my webhost is notorious for not supporting the most recent version.

February 3, 2005

so

with the addition of bip2 to the family, i have to sell my 3rd generation iSkin. i'm throwing the griffin earjams into the mix just cuz they're pretty useless to me.. and someone else might like them.
jesse and colin have both poo-pooed them after a brief testing of the product. i hope it sells. i don't like it sitting on my computer desk anymore.

January 28, 2005

well

only 10 months ago i got my first ever 15g 3rd gen iPod.. and a best buy 2 year product replacement plan. i got to use that plan to get this:

a 20g 4th gen iPod for the low, low price of $40. so, that's all!

January 24, 2005

simulated

so, i shelled out for a new video card and the sims 2 yesterday. omg it's so much better than the first (which i will still continue to play!). i made kurt and i and we live in this little house, etc. etc. the kurt character walks just like him. i'll post pics tonight.
he and joe are heading to milwaukee to hang out with their texas friends who were replanted up here. so i'm either going to go out for sushi by myself, go out for sushi with bob*, or stay home and play sims 2 for another 6 hours.
*unbeknownst to him yet. i'll call him if that's what i decide to do.

January 20, 2005

:/

so bip, my iPod, doesn't appear to be holding a charge for more than 2 hours or so. yesterday, i listened to it on the ride to work, at work for about an hour, and on the ride home it shut off next to hilldale. i've only had it for 10 months. i bought the best buy replacement and service warranty, so i should be able to exchange it, but i like the looks of the third generation better than the fourth.. and i'd have to shell out for a new iSkin, too, cuz of the new button placement. of course, there's always the off-chance that they have some 3rd gen iPods sitting in their warehouse that they'll hook me up with. who knows.

January 14, 2005

question

sometimes i like to travel around the ring but i get stuck going around only 5 sites instead of the 15 or so that are members. does this happen to anyone else? and why?

December 29, 2004

host update

well, i guess they're attempting to resolve this issue.. until that happens though, i have to check my email through a yahoo account. which totally sucks. my host said they're being removed from the list and its "users" will be able to get emails in up to 48 hours but that doesn't mean tds will update their list in that time. so i could be using yahoo for like 6 months or something lame like that. dumb. i'm gunna go watch the drama on tnt.

December 27, 2004

so my (or my host's) domain has been blacklisted and i can't receive emails because tds uses this list. wtf.

:(

a while ago, i ordered some Griffin EarJams. these puppies attached to the factory iPod earbuds to increase bass and deliver improved sound. so, i ordered them mid-september.. the product page claimed they'd be shipping by the end of september. to make a long story short, they kept changing the ship date until, early nov, it said "now shipping". in the middle of all this, i emailed their customer service (which, by the way, is the opposite of those two words) asking if everything was still on track to ship end of sept cuz i couldn't wait to hear them! the only response i got was "yes." so i wait and wait until it says "now shipping!" so i emailed them again. "did you lose my order? just checking." no response. until 3 days after that, my card was charged and 2 days after that, they arrive.
they're shite. if you know anyone who thinks they want to support one more of griffin's stupid iPodified products, tell them to go buy some sony in-ear phones.

November 13, 2004

i think i got it

after stumbling upon this very helpful site, i found a script to close comments on a non-mySQL server with mt 2.6. so! i think i might have them beat.

November 12, 2004

comment spam

i'll stop talking about it as soon as i figure out a good way to deal with it. between leaving work at 1 and getting home from errands at 5:30, i got hit with about 10 spams. i've tried mt-blacklist, but my server seems to choke on the sheer size of the blacklist file, so i can't actually delete and rebuild my entries. i've also been adding the ip addresses to the banned list in mt, but they're obviously faked and random, cuz the activity log has never stated that a comment was blocked. so, as i have to go back into every entry that gets spammed, i just close the comments on that particular entry. they seem to target a select group of entries, so i'll get them all closed eventually. then i'll go back each week or two and close the ones from previous weeks; no one reads my blog all the way back anyhow. except me. :)

cool radio

got comments working again. and got about 20 comment spams over the last 12 hours. :/

September 16, 2004

perhaps

i'm coming in late on the bandwagon, but i've just subscribed to bloglines and i think it's a fantastic thing. i have three subscribers to this here blog (one of whom is me), but some of the other places to which i'm subscribed have over 3,000. i guess i better start coming up with better content quickly. i ordered some Griffin EarJams a week ago, before they were "shipping by end of september". so i have to wait to report on their quality.

September 12, 2004

banning

i've had to institute IP banning on my blog. . i don't know if the spammers are faking their IP addresses, so if you get an error while commenting, please email me.

September 10, 2004

ugh

i had to re-do my blog one more time. i've sent an email to my webhost asking them what is up with everything. they're usually pretty good about helping me, so maybe they know something i don't.

August 14, 2004

oops

i did it again. i double-entered two large checks to woodman's into my register. at least, when i do this, it's a mistake made to my benefit.
i was browsing through amazon yesterday and noticed about 5 knitting books that are not-yet-released. i was gunna use my gift card from work to grow my knitting book collection, but i don't want to wait until they're published. one of the books on my wishlist has been listed since april 4 or some such nonsense. so instead, i got outkast and a couple drumnbass cds.

July 22, 2004

omg

i hate comment spam. i've deleted seven in the last 2 days. i'm glad i returned the laptop. they were pretty nice to me when i said that they were too understaffed for me to ask questions to determine if the machine was right for me. friday is coming really slowly this week. :/

July 18, 2004

:/

i just bought a laptop. i'm having buyer's remorse cuz i can't get the dang wireless internet to work. edit@17:26: it's going back. in order to get it to work with the tds modem, i need to spend another $50 on a card for the modem. i guess i don't really need a laptop anyhow.

June 27, 2004

hm.

i just downloaded firefox and it seems pretty neat.

May 21, 2004

omg

my old bbs has a website now. by "my", i mean, the one that i used to call all the time and spend my nights staring at a mac classic in the dark. excerpts from my "bio"*: /i think most people should leave me alone if they dont like me or what i do, and why do i smell oranges? i want an orange./ /i wish i could walk around with my own little space, and shut my sun off when i didnt want it on but id still be able to see and talk to people next to me, but their sun wouldnt get in my way./
this is especially funny: /pat mccurdy is god/ *my last call made to this bbs was some time in '95, hence all the angst. and just for fun, lets see what i wrote a year ago.

i spent the morning cleaning up my html and making a php include for my nav. then i did a little maintenance on the ring all while playing with the ferrets at interaction intervals. now my coffee has made me shakey.

April 8, 2004

91.5fm?

so, my iTrip station is 91.5. i often wonder if cars driving next to me practice "station scanning", like i do; where they'll just press the radio scan button until they hear something they like. if the cars driving next to me do that and get to 91.5, they'll be privy to my musical tastes for the duration of the red light or other traffic occurrences. incidentally, 91.5 is chicago public radio, and on a clear day on the east side of madison, you can hear it well.

March 13, 2004

erm...

this came home with me yesterday: but since i don't have firewire, i have to wait for an apple.com firewire->usb cable which isn't available at best buy. it'll give me time to organize my playlist before making a mess of it. i also ordered the fm transmitter so i'll have access to all of my music in my car. /all/ of my music. i'm super excited about that.

March 9, 2004

not much

to report on. the computer is fine, though i still haven't been credited by the company to whom i returned the broken bits. i have to call them today and will surely have trouble. i can sense it. they're rated poorly by the better business bureau. still not done with kurt's sweater and his bday is tomorrow. a day which i have taken off of work and will hopefully be able to get the last sleeve done and get it all seamed up. i'm really tired of 5x1 ribbing. :)

March 7, 2004

now i'm a geek

it's official: /and/ it's the coolest thing ever. /and/ yes, i'm up this early admiring my new setup.

March 6, 2004

hallelujah

i'm all back up and running.. i still have to install all my programs and turn it back into my own computer. i'm also going to buy another monitor so i'll have dualies!

March 3, 2004

slackin'

i'm leaving work a little early to go to a local computer store to buy working computer bits. and a new case. again, i'm kinda nervous. we're also getting kurt's glasses fixed, so that's a more legitimate reason for leaving work early.

March 1, 2004

:/

so i applied online this morning for an RMA to return the hardware. the company's phone line has been busy since 2p. i bet they filed for bankruptcy over the weekend.

February 28, 2004

i just know

you're all on the edge of your seats over my computer.. it's misbehaving and i'll have to return the new mobo+cpu. hopefully they won't give me any grief. so, depending on when i can get a new one installed, i'll be down for the count for a little while.

February 27, 2004

well...

i'm back up. i need to get used to winxp. and, of course, i lost all my email addresses. poo.

sorta good news

i took the day off work today.. my throat was feeling a little sore. anyhow, i'm at my good friend jon's house and he's helping me get my computer back up to 100% healthy. :) there's no fridayfive today, so i'll leave you with this update.

*not safe for work.

February 25, 2004

if all goes well, i'll be up and running in an hour.

February 21, 2004

and another thing

if my new mobo doesn't support my current video card, i will have to go get a new one. and perhaps a new monitor to go with it. then i can have dualies!

excellent

with the very gracious help of jay allen, i now have an mt plugin installed to block comment spam. it's generally based on a list that he's put together of url's that are most likely to be left in someone's comments. now back to regularly scheduled knitting.

February 19, 2004

omg yay

i just ordered a new 1.7ghz cpu and motherboard combo. this might not mean anything to you, dear reader, but to me it means my computer will soon be twice as fast. yes, i said twice. i can't wait to install it.

i guess

it's fixed. Sam called back and left a message saying that the problem should be fixed.. but Kurt's still in bed so I can't have him make sure of it before I call to get a week and a days' worth of credit. *waits for someone to wake up at home*

i'm looking foward to being unhooked for the next 4(?) days. see yoU! :)

August 10, 2003

disconnect.

i'm turning off the computer to move it. no digital contact will occur from home until at least thursday. probably later, knowing tds' track record. oh, no phone either. blow up my cell if you have to.

July 31, 2003

methinks

email is working now. a test sent from work to home has resulted positively. i will now bask in the memories of having lunch at noodles&co. outside, with the ducks.

tech difficulties

my server seems to be having some troubles. i'm still unable to receive email. maybe it's a clue to open that yarn store. :)

July 30, 2003

apparently

in addition to my site acting funky, i'm unable to receive email at bekee.com. stay tuned.

pirateers, unite

apparently napster is arising from the dead. being one who stopped file sharing, for the most part, because of time and the inability to search for something that i wanted to hear but didn't know the name, i'm neither here nor there on the subject. maybe if i had an mp3 player in my car, i'd be more excited.

learning

i'm learning (minor) php, with the help of my favorite co-worker. *happy*
apparently this-or-that is on hiatus for a while, so i have no outsourced content to use. maybe i'll find something later in the afternoon.

July 16, 2003

apparently

a sh*tload of spam has been sent on the behalf of my domain. is there a way to stop this? i am the victim here.

July 9, 2003

sometimes

i wonder about setting up an anonymous dupe blog. one that contains the stuff that i ramble about currently, and one that contains that stuff and the stuff that my coworkers and mom* shouldn't read. *sorry, mom.

July 6, 2003

not that you guys care

but all the comments have successfully been put back in their places. rock on with the rain.

July 2, 2003

functioning

the comments should be working again.. i've also figured out MT's database and will have to reinsert the old comments back into the entries. thanks for your unending patience. :)

whoah

*7* penis enlargement emails this morning. Does everyone know about my teeny weeny?

June 30, 2003

i wish

i were a little japanese girl. "...newspaper ads warned phone users to avoid walking and writing emails at the same time."

June 29, 2003

so..

as a result of messing things up, some of my archive links don't work right now. i'll get to that later. i'm awfully tired of typing.

i shore messed up

yea, i accidentally deleted something very important to the functionality of my blog. anyhow, i lost almost all of the comments that you guys made.. i've spend the last 4 hours copying and pasting all my entries back into the database. that was fun.

June 16, 2003

:/?

i've just spent the last half hour trying to google people with whom i went to high school. wtf is wrong with me?

June 8, 2003

1.5 hours

i've been on the computer longer for one sitting today than i have since knitting started.

June 7, 2003

found

Your Name Here on #!/usr/bin/girl. apparently the literal meaning of "bekee" is "Not you again." it's funny. check it out.

May 30, 2003

6 degrees?

it's a good movie anyhow. i keep a chart. please note that no one gets added unless i realize there's a connection between me and someone else that i know and i had no idea they knew each other. i've only been doing this for about a year, so it's small. also note that in madison, it's more like 3 degrees. you're not really supposed to be able to read the names. (img code missing)

May 8, 2003

wanna?

be friends? Go here and fill out all the stuff and then find me, bekee, to be your friend. There aren't enough wiscoreps yet. c'mon!

March 22, 2003

Yay!

(image gone for some reason) Here's my new toy! I've had the same (broken) printer for a couple of years now and I found it was high time to upgrade. It's nothing fancy, but at least it prints without white lines.

technical difficulties

Sorry folks, I think my webhost is having cgi-bin problems. Stay tuned.

February 17, 2003

bigger and better?

This story is pretty good news as far as users of Blogger should be concerned. I'm sure you've read it already though, if you're into blogs and whatnot.

too many celebrations

It amazes me just how frequently I can withstand social settings every single night. Whether it's hanging out at the Tavern, catching a snack with workmates, or shopping for the latest in wire and bead supplies. I used to be a complete introvert... at least as far as interacting with more than one person. Maybe that's why I'm an INFP.

February 3, 2003

I promise, I'll stop

after this one last post about the poor person who is lookin' to get his or her haircut. Here's the final count of searches from January 2003 with haircut references... [drumroll] 125! My favorite one was "haircuts for me", haircuts for me?! How the heck does google know who you are? G'luck, pal.

January 29, 2003

Haircuts for 2003

Someone is desperately trying to get their hair cut short in the latest style. My site has had a total of 29 hits this week of someone searching for the most popular haircuts of 2003; phrasing it in as many different ways as is possible with 3 'words'. I sure hope they can get their hair cut soon.

January 3, 2003

go on, git.

Go download some good music. Your mileage may vary. C'mon though, you'll find /something/ that you like.

December 8, 2002

pretty cool day

I spent most of it searching fastidiously for a CD of various artists... one of which is featured on this site. This guy is a genious illustrator. I bow to people like him.
We also went out for bfast with Joe, Tooky, Blackie and his friend Peder (pronounced "petter"). Blackie was in town for the weekend to see Jim Rome, someone I'm not sure I would enjoy listening to. But, who knows.
Anyhow, I finally found the CD (and one other) on the German version of Amazon. I spent about 20 minutes going back and forth from amazon.de and my trusty Babel Fish. I also had to use a currency calculator cuz who knows what the Euro is doing these days. It was cheaper for two CDs plus shipping than just one of them on the English version of Amazon. What's up with that?

EXTENDED BODY:

December 4, 2002

...

Every title I thought of seemed too long for a title. There's a joke over here on this side of the world, that the copy writers in book development don't have much of an opportunity to write, so they write the longest book titles possible. I digress. I'm currently going through a transaction dispute with an auction that I "won" on eBay. The seller is making him/herself nearly impossible to contact, and I'm not sure they're even going to send me the merchandise. Half of this whole deal is my fault, but the other half is not. I've been relieved to find out that I am not the most unintelligent eBayer out there. On a very excellent note, I'm getting my hairs cut tonight. When she asks,"What are we doing today?" I will say, "Short and Sassy!".

November 27, 2002

Message Board

I already f*cked it up and I'm at work so I can't fix it til I get home. Dammit.

November 19, 2002

Whoah!

My very first sale on eBay is selling! It ends in less than 2 hours and people are going nutso! I started the bidding at $10 just cuz I don't really care how much it goes for and it's already up to $23. I'm psyched.

November 9, 2002

eBay

Thanks to a friend, who will remain anonymous, I've recently become interested in eBay. Look out resellers!

November 7, 2002

Well, I'll be.

The phone is working! Kurt was "Available for a 4 hour period of time" and no one even showed up. My guess is that TDS neglected to run the remote test and went right for the dispatching of a repair specialist. I'll tell ya one thing, though, if they try to charge me for their services, we're gunna have a problem.

Cut off from the world

Well.. still no phone service. It would appear that either the technicians from TDS /and/ Ameritech don't know what they're doing, or it's just the ones from Ameritech. I'm not too sure I enjoy the fact that no one knows why I don't have phone service. It would seem to me that it's something isolated (i.e., everyone on the block has phone service but me) and if I had a phone line repair kit, I could probably fix it. Anyhow, if I don't have it when I get home tonight, three days without phone service will be prorated towards my account. I can't be paying for something I'm not able to use. Hell, I only have the phone line so I can use DSL. If this can't be resolved, I'll get rid of the land line and get a cable modem and stick with using my cell phone. That's enough out of me for now.

November 5, 2002

Phone and DSL outage

If you're trying to get ahold of me for any reason, it won't work. I called Kurt yesterday at 5:11pm, prior to me leaving for home. Sometime between 5:15 and 5:40, my phone service halted; therefore making my DSL inoperable. You can still email and/or leave a voice mail message, but it might take me a while to respond, since I can only check email from work. Pooie.

October 26, 2002

Spam

I've never eaten it, I don't think I would like it, and I don't want it in my inbox. This is the type of thing I get to look at when I clean out the Deleted Items folder. I think I'd be more upset if those damn Koreans didn't design such cute gambling ads.

October 23, 2002

blogring

I think I'm going to start taking it. I've been up since about 4:30.. there are really only so many web sites I can stare at in a given week. I had intended on getting up around 7 (now), having some coffee.. reading the news online. Instead, I've been going through old emails, checking up on other blogs, and playing JT's Blocks. I hope I can make it through this all-day meeting.

October 20, 2002

ohmigod

Okay, so Kurt had to exchange his game controller for one that works. This meant a trip to Best Buy. I wondered, aloud, what I was going to get? Well, I got this . So it's kinda frivilous, but I stare at the computer soooo much, that it's got to have some positive impact on my eyeballs.

October 19, 2002

i'm a g33k

So, I started a webring. I feel like I should go to an Internet Users Anonymous meeting. You can join from here. I wish that you would since I'm the only member right now. It's kind of sad at the beginning.

October 13, 2002

Okay, good.

I'm no longer a moron. I sacrificed a little flexibility to get my archive looking right. But damn if relative style sheets will be the death of me.

October 12, 2002

testing this thang

Only after an hour or so of set-up and config, Moveable Type is powering this here baby. Have I mentioned that I desperately need some girl scouts to come over and wash my car for $5? It's filthy, inside and out. George came over and we got the A/C out of the window. We won't be using it again next year cuz it's old and not energy-efficient. It's sitting up in the attic if any big strong boys want to come over and take it. Free.
